At the end of March, tons of waste were piling up in the streets of Paris, due to a strike of garbage collectors. The latter continue to protest against the pension reform: the CGT has filed a new strike notice from 13 April 2023.

From March 6 to 29, 2023, Parisian garbage collectors led a spectacular strike to protest against the pensionreform. More than 10,000 tons of waste accumulated in the capital, before a private company came to collect the garbage, and the movement ended because of the lack of strikers.

However, the CGT does not intend to give up the fight, and launches a new strike notice for April 13, 2023. In a public letter addressed to Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris, the union announces a " notice of indefinite and renewable strike from April 13, 2023 (...) for the withdrawal of the Macron/Borne pension reform and for a return to retirement at 60 maximum, with, for the staff concerned, a return to 50 and 55 years. For several days now, overflowing garbage cans have been the daily life of many Parisians, due to the garbage collectors' strike against the pension reform. 10 000 tons of waste are now piling up in the streets of the capital. [Read more]

The text of the pension reform is currently being examined by the Constitutional Council. It is the "Wise Men" that the unions now hope to influence, to have this reform project cancelled. " Our objective is to bring down this reform and to have a very strong impact again," says Christophe Farinet, a member of the CGT FTDNEEA, in the columns of Le Parisien. The union also invites the garbage collectors to join the demonstration organized on April 6, 2023, in Paris.

The CGT denounces in particular the increase in the retirement age for waste management workers, even though " the vast majority of DPE staff have a life expectancy of 12 to 17 years less than all employees in France. This information is not supported by any study in France. However, a statistic from the Ministry of Labor, representing the year 2019, shows that workers in the waste management sector have a higher than average risk offatal accidents.

Should we then prepare for a new heap of waste? During the previous social movement, some Parisians and elected officials were worried about the health consequences of such a strike.
