Public transportation in Paris and Île-de-France is facing significant disruptions during the first week of operations, from January 5 to 11, 2026. Nighttime service will be heavily impacted on RER, Transilien, and tramway lines operated by RATP and SNCF, due to ongoing maintenance work, as well as weather conditions like snow and ice. Here's what you need to know.

The start of the week proved especially tough for public transportation in Paris and Île-de-France. After two weeks of Christmas holidays, services resumed amid snow and ice, leading to significant disruptions from the very first hours. On Monday, four centimeters of snow fell on Paris, causing record traffic jams totaling 1,020 kilometers by late afternoon. Frigid temperatures, ranging from -7 to -3 degrees Celsius, turned the roads into skating rinks, forcing several bus networks to halt operations. The RATP and the SNCF operated trains throughout the night to prevent freezing on the tracks. By Wednesday morning, all of the RATP bus lines were suspended.

Which Metro and Tram Lines Are Affected This Week?

On the Paris metro network, only one line will be affected this week:

  • Line 12: On Sunday, January 11, 2026, starting at 10 p.m., train service will be suspended along the entire line for modernization work. If you're planning to go out that evening, please plan ahead as the line will be completely closed.

On the tramway front, unfortunately, prolonged disruptions persist:

  • T1: Train services remain suspended between Asnières-Quatre Routes and Gare de Saint-Denis, with disruptions continuing across the rest of the line due to damage caused by a third party at L'Île-Saint-Denis. Reopening is tentatively scheduled for summer 2026.

  • T2: Journey disruptions will persist until the end of February 2026 between Porte de Versailles and Suzanne Lenglen due to extensive modernization work. To reach the Porte de Versailles from Suzanne Lenglen, pedestrians can walk to the nearby Balard station on T3a.

What’s the latest update for Wednesday, January 7?

Snowfalls across Paris and the Île-de-France region on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, have led to a complete shutdown of RATP bus services. Due to the challenging weather conditions and icy roads, the RATP has suspended all bus lines until further notice for safety reasons. Metro and RER trains are still operational to allow residents of Île-de-France to get around.

How to Get Back on Track After the Snow Disruptions?

Another challenging day is expected in Île-de-France this Wednesday. Commuters are advised to limit their travel and check traffic conditions before heading out, as the region remains under orange alert. While the metro, RER, and tram services are operating normally thanks to proactive measures by RATP, the bus network will face significant disruptions, with many routes halted in the suburbs. Be sure to consult the apps Bonjour RATP and SNCF Connect for real-time updates, as conditions are changing hour by hour. Bus services are expected to gradually resume as road conditions improve. For the rest of the week, scheduled maintenance work mostly causes evening disruptions after 8 p.m.

In brief, the week from January 5 to 11, 2026, will be remembered for a notably challenging return to school and work amidst snowfall across the Paris region. The RATP and SNCF are continuing their scheduled maintenance works, including complete closures of the Transilien Line U each evening for nearly a month, and the Line 12 metro line on Sunday night. If you need to travel late into the night, consider using the Noctilien night bus lines. Best of luck navigating this turbulent start to the year!
