The Olympic Games are shaping up to be a difficult time for Parisians' mobility, with the ring road cut by one lane and crowded public transport. A new proposal also calls for a car-free capital for the duration of the competition.

Many Parisians are already planning to leave the capital during the Olympic Games, to avoid the 15 million visitors and the difficulties of getting around in the streets and on public transport. A lane on the ring road will be reserved for athletes, as on many other roads, and traffic inside the city is expected to be tense, while the metro is expected to be full to bursting point. Fortheir part, the environmentalists areproposing a car-free capital, reserved for bicycles and pedestrians, during the six weeks of the competition, fromJuly 26 to September 8, 2024.

A "totally far-fetched" idea for elected representatives on the right, notably David Alphand of the Changer Paris group, who believes that there is "no realistic spirit behind the proposals". In short, it would be a huge Paris Respire day, which, according to David Belliard, is in line with Paris' philosophy of "accelerating ecological public policies" thanks to the Paris Games. The proposal, put forward by the Paris Council's ecologist group, aims to "facilitate and fluidify traffic for security vehicles, professional vehicles and all those with reduced mobility who will need their vehicles".

The elected representatives hope to encourage the people of Paris to take public transport, which they hope will be free of charge from the opening of the Olympic Games to the closing of the Paralympic Games. But will the metro be able to efficiently accommodate the millions of people expected to use it, when everyday life is already complicated for users in normal times? Clément Beaune, the French Minister of Transport, promised"cycling and 100% public transport for spectators".
