Night of Museums 2026: the program at the Guimet Museum in Paris

  • The Guimet Museum celebrates the Lantern Festival
The Korean company Baru invites visitors to a sensorial immersion into the country’s founding beliefs, straddling shamanism and Buddhism, to honor the eternal Birth and Awakening of the Buddha. Performed in the Khmer Courtyard of the museum, the pieces fuse memory, spirituality, and humanity, aiming to mirror the world’s suffering in art and ease it with a warm, collective energy. Monk Subeom will chant the associated sutras, bringing to life the famous monks’ dance. He will be joined by two performers from the shamanic tradition, Pak Kee-ryang and Hong Hyo-jin, along with musician Jeong Yeon-rak. Jeong Yeon-rak is also the creator of exquisite traditional Korean paper lamps that will envelop the performance in a poetic, mysterious atmosphere.
    7:00 PM, 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM
    6, Place d’Iéna - Khmer Courtyard
    Free
Duration: 3 performances of 20 minutes each

  • The Shaman with Ten Thousand Spirits: a look at the fascinating world of Korean shamanism
    Conversation with Hervé Péjaudier
Drawing on the life story of Kim Keum-hwa, Share Happiness, Dissolve Resentment, Hervé Péjaudier highlights the vitality of contemporary Korean shamanism. He traces the extraordinary journey of this major figure (1931–2019), who rose from fortune-teller to renowned mudang for spectacular rituals. Recognized as a Living National Treasure in 1984, Kim Keum-hwa played a key role in preserving and transmitting Korean shamanic traditions, bringing them to the West while remaining deeply rooted in her local practice and community. During the event, the exceptional documentary by anthropologist Alexandre Guillemoz on a private ritual of the shaman Puchae in Seoul in the 1980s will be shown.
Author of a thesis on KIM Keum-hwa, Hervé Péjaudier is co-translator with Han Yumi, a professor at Shinhan University, of the life story of the famed Shaman with Ten Thousand Spirits. A book signing for Partager le bonheur, dénouer la rancœur, the life story Manshin, the Shaman with Ten Thousand Spirits by KIM Keum-hwa (translated by Han Yumi and Hervé Péjaudier, Imago Editions, 2015) and The Shaman with the Fan, life story of a Korean mudang by Alexandre Guillemoz (Imago Editions, 2010) will follow the talk.
