Eve Vernet was the most celebrated rose breeder of her generation. Now teetering on bankruptcy and about to be bought out by a heavyweight rival, she ends up working alongside three trainees hired by her loyal secretary Vera—who has zero horticultural know-how. Together, they fight to save the family business and chase recognition at the industry's most prestigious competitions.
The film roots itself in a world rarely explored on screen: French horticultural creation, specifically the hybridizing of roses—a national specialty alongside haute cuisine and fragrance. Pierre Pinaud shot in the Roanne region, amid a preserved landscape, and leaned on the Bagatelle Park—with its century-long tradition as the stage for the world’s most prestigious rose contest—for the competition scenes. The director cites Ken Loach’s The Angels' Share as a benchmark for writing: an exalted milieu inhabited by characters on the margins.
Catherine Frot, tapped for her distinctly French sensibility, according to the director, shares the poster with Vincent Dedienne, with whom she had already shared the stage in a theater production. The cast also includes Fatsah Bouyahmed, Olivia Côte and rapper Melan Omerta, the film’s breakout star in the role of Fred.
