Pedro Almodóvar's new film, Strange Way of Life, had its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival. Presented in Hors-Compétition, this short film is a colorful queer western starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal. The film will be released on August 16, 2023.
Pedro Almodovar's short film Strange Way of Life may only last half an hour, but it's no less delicious. This short film recounts the love-hate relationship between two men, Silva and Jake, played by Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke respectively. When the former's son kills the latter's sister-in-law, the sheriff has to put his feelings aside to pursue justice. Even if it means going after the man he loves.
Can two men live together on a ranch? That's the question that dogs Almodovar, just as it has dogged the film's two characters for decades. Almodovar pays homage to his own themes, as well as to the Western genre, whose codes he takes great pleasure in hijacking. It's at once a comedy, a drama and a pure Western, while at the same time taking on the queer aspect of the film more than any other Western ever has.
Above all, just because it's a short film doesn't mean the team isn't taking the project seriously. Strange Way of Life is visually sumptuous, as is its leading duo. It's a rich, unique project that deserves to be seen!
