The film world is eagerly awaiting the release of the new drama Un hiver à Yanji, directed and written by Anthony Chen. Presented at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2023 in the Un Certain Regard selection, this work will be unveiled to the general public on November 22, 2023.
Discovering winter in Yanji, a border town in northern China, the film plunges us into the story of Haofeng, a man who finds himself in this town after traveling from Shanghai for a wedding. His sense of lostness fades when he crosses paths with Nana, an intriguing tour guide. Through her, he meets Xiao, a cook. The bond forged between these three protagonists over the course of a memorable evening takes them on an introspective journey, bringing them face to face with their pasts and secrets.
With a cast including Zhou Dongyu, Liu Haoran and Chuxiao Qu, this film promises to be a memorable cinematic experience. Its original title Ran dong, or The Breaking Ice in English, metaphorically evokes the release of suppressed desires, like the frozen landscapes of Mount Changbai that gradually thaw out.
Anthony Chen 's decision to set his story in Yanji is not insignificant. This town, on the border with Korea, is often shrouded in a mysterious winter atmosphere, providing an ideal setting for a story filled with secrets, desires and revelations.
