Since 2010, the Queer Palm has been awarded during the Cannes Film Festival, by an independent jury to a film "dealing with LGBT+ or feminist themes or characters, or challenging gender norms".
Chaired by Belgian director Lukas Dhont(Girl, Close), this year's jury included artist, actress and drag queen Paloma, British-Palestinian journalist and director Jad Salfiti, Brazilian director Juliana Rojas and French director Sophie Letourneur.
23 feature-length and short films in all categories were in the running for this year's coveted queer award, including Andrea Arnold'sBird, Jacques Audiard'sEmilia Perez, Christophe Honoré'sMarcello Mio, Marcelo Caetano'sBaby, Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel's Eat the Night, Noémie Merlant's Les Femmes au Balcon and Alain Guiraudie's Miséricorde.
The overall winner of the Queer Palm 2024 is none other than Emanuel Parvu's Three Kilometers to the End of the World. The film tells the story of a young Romanian man whose homosexuality is revealed without his knowledge, and who is ostracized by the population of his small village in the Romanian countryside. In official competition, the film is still in the running for the Palme d'Or.
