A few hours before the announcement of the full lineup for the Cannes Film Festival 2026, one last parallel prize was handed out: the Citizenship Award. This marks the eighth straight year that the prize has gone to one of the films in the official competition for its artistic qualities and its values of humanism, secularism and universalism.
This year, the jury, chaired by French director and screenwriter Jean-Paul Salomé, consisted of South-Sudanese actor Mohamat-Amine Benrachid, French screenwriter and director Michel Leclerc, French producer Fabienne Servan-Schreiber and culture journalist Micha Khalil.
The jury unanimously awarded the Citizenship Prize 2026 to the film Fjord by Cristian Mungiu. The jurors also handed a special mention to the French film Notre salut by Emmanuel Marre.
Created by the Clap Citizen Cannes association, chaired by the Franco-Moroccan filmmaker Nabil Ayouch, the Citizenship Prize was awarded last year to the film Un Simple Accident by Jafar Panahi.
