Carlobianchi and Doriano, two down-on-their-luck men in their fifties, spend their nights wandering from bar to bar in search of one more drink. When they meet Giulio, a quiet, almost naïve architecture student, this encounter slowly upends the balance within the trio.

Presented at Cannes and later shown at several international festivals, the feature-length film also confirms Francesco Sossai’s trajectory, as he delivers here his second feature after Altri cannibali (2021), which has remained unreleased in France, following a string of short films including Surfaces and L’Anniversaire d’Enrico.

Shot in late 2024 across several towns in Veneto, including Venice, Sedico, Feltre, Padua, Chioggia and Altivole, the film anchors its narrative in real places, such as bacaro da Lele and the Km 19 brewery, while other settings are fictional.

Francesco Sossai ties the project's origin to a boozy night followed by a meeting with a student from IUAV University in Venice. From that night came the idea of two men coming down from the mountains to share a last drink in Venice. The filmmaker also leans into the heritage of the comédie à l’italienne, citing Federico Fellini’s The Vitelloni and Dino Risi’s The Show-off.

Between late-night traffic, unexpected encounters, and a generation gap, Le dernier pour la route joins the ranks of contemporary Italian dramedies.
