The official band of"The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" and a key figure in hip-hop jazz, The Roots formed in Philadelphia in 1987 under the leadership of singer Black Thought and drummer Questlove. With a dozen studio albums to their credit, the band is also known for its many collaborations throughout its career. Notable examples include their duet with Eminem on the track "Lose Yourself" at the 2003 Grammy Awards, as well as their collaboration with Toots and the Maytals, not to mention their work with Erykah Badu, Cody Chesnutt, Ol' Dirty Bastard, John Legend, Jill Scott, and Al Green.
Drawing influence from other musical genres such as jazz, funk, rock, and soul, The Roots have won no less than four Grammy Awards, including "Best R&B Album" for "Wake Up!", "Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance" for "Hang in There" (with John Legend) and "Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group" for "Shine".
