Located on the Trocadéro Square, adjoining the Musée de l'Homme and the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine, there is a museum that remains relatively little known. And for good reason: it has been closed since 2017 for renovation. After lengthy work, the museum has finally reopened its doors, becoming one of Paris's new favorite cultural hotspots.
The National Navy Museum is housed in the heart of the Palais de Chaillot, bordering the Musée de l'Homme. This place of art and history, but also a hub of science, tells the traditions and the adventures of France at sea. The National Navy Museum is one of the two oldest naval museums in the world!
The musée de la Marine invites readers on a voyage into the sea like never before — from the ocean depths and seabed to its wildlife, the ships that traverse and explore it, the people who make their lives by it, and its place in our environment...
More than a thousand pieces and works have been restored and showcased in this new exhibition route: visitors can discover and admire scientific and technical objects, scale models, paintings, decorative objects, photographs, sculptures, and furniture... The marine world has fascinated and inspired many artists and engineers.
The museum is also very immersive, drawing you in completely: at the start of the visit you step into the bow of a ship and embark on an exploration through the different worlds on display.
The visitor route is laid out across several zones: ship models and hull shapes, the art of navigation, naval sculpture, France’s ports, and the maritime economy. Temporary exhibitions also offer a chance to explore certain themes or artists connected to the sea.
The National Navy Museum is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., except on Tuesdays. It also closes on January 1, May 1, July 14, and December 25. Admission runs between 9 and 15 euros, depending on the venue’s current programming. The museum is accessible via the Trocadéro station (lines 6 and 9), exit no. 6 “Avenue Paul Doumer – Musée de l’Homme.”
The museum also offers several playful and digital experiences to make the visit more interactive. You can discover a family-friendly investigative game, experiences with a VR headset or in a simulator, and even a small digital workshop that lets you play the role of an underwater archaeologist. The permanent route is also complemented by accommodations for audiences with physical, auditory, visual or cognitive disabilities, as well as for the elderly or very young children, so that everyone can enjoy this new venue. The Navy Museum aims to please all its visitors, with games, activities, exhibitions and news items suited to all ages.
To extend your visit, also swing by the bookshop, or the restaurant, a brand-new addition to the museum. At the "Carré de l'Amiral", you can enjoy both sweet and savory offerings, as well as culinary happenings, such as an oyster bar or a cocktail bar.
A fascinating museum, waiting to be rediscovered without delay! Hoist the sails, sailors: the National Museum of the Navy opens its doors wide.
