Urban culture and street photography are in the spotlight at Quai de la Photo, from October 2 to December 18, 2025. The art center presents its new free exhibition, Urban Photo, 50 years of urban aesthetics, and invites us to (re)discover four emblematic photographers from the world of urban art.
This exhibition is not a historical retrospective of street art, or a comprehensive overview of urban art. Instead, it focuses on four artists, four photographers: through their eyes and lenses, we can see the evolution of views on this street counterculture. Over the past 50 years, the reputation of urban art has often changed, from a form of rebellion to an art form that is much appreciated today.
The works of Martine Barrat, Sophie Bramly, Little Shao and Gérard Guittot offer different perspectives on this urban culture, in France and elsewhere.
From France's first hip-hop scenes to modern artists and the various urban art movements, the last five decades are revealed in this photographic journey. From one image to the next, you can compare the changes, emblems and artists that have marked each era.
The exhibition features photographic archives, cult film extracts and soundtracks, highlighting the close links between urban art, pop culture and fiction. And to extend this artistic history, Quai de la Photo is organizing a photo competition, open to all. Selected photographs will be displayed in the exhibition during the final weeks of the event.
