From England to Mexico via Italy, France, and the United States, from surrealism to esotericism and feminism: Leonora Carrington led a surprising life, free from the rules and constraints of her time. Discover the life and, above all, the works of this special artist with the retrospective exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg, on display from February 18 to July 19, 2026.
Less well known than Frida Kahlo, Leonora Carrington is nevertheless considered by her peers to be an equally important artist. A British painter and sculptor, she made her mark on the art world with her unusual and innovative style and creations. The Musée du Luxembourg presents her as a "Vitruvian Woman," a model of harmony and innovation in the 20th century.
Leonora Carrington herself sought harmony: she worked on the fusion between humans and animals, between the masculine and the feminine. Her creations are inspired by mythology andesotericism: forces of nature and mystical powers bring this new and colorful universe to life.
The artist's paintings are linked to the surrealist movement: they feature collage compositions, bright colors, hybrid characters, and powerful symbolism.
Leonora Carrington paints her life and her experiences. She draws inspiration from her travels, her encounters, her search for herself, and her curiosity about the world. In her art as in her beliefs, the artist displays a strongavant-garde spirit. She is a feminist and an environmentalist. She migrated several times, fleeing World War II or escaping confinement in a psychiatric hospital.
This colorful life is reflected in her astonishing paintings, which can be admired at the Musée du Luxembourg during the first half of 2026.
