Resistance fighters from abroad: Manouchian and the foreigners in an exhibition in Champigny

The Musée de la Résistance nationale in Champigny-sur-Marne presents Résistants d’ailleurs… et pourtant oubliés. Archives, letters and works of art shed light on the involvement of foreigners in the Resistance and the transmission of their memory.

How have foreign nationals involved in the French Resistance been represented and commemorated? At the National Museum of the Resistance, the exhibition Resistance fighters from elsewhere… and yet forgotten brings together historical documents and artistic works to trace their journeys, and then the making of their memory.

Missak Manouchian is one of the threads running through the exhibition. Underground leaflets, forged papers, photographs and final letters written by those executed offer tangible traces of these acts of commitment. The museum is showing Manouchian’s final letter, on loan for the exhibition.

The exhibition then explores the role artists play in passing these stories on. Works by Ernest Pignon-Ernest, writings by Paul Éluard and Louis Aragon, as well as cinema and comic books, all contribute to this interpretation. Pages from Résistants oubliés tell the story of Addi Bâ.

A photograph of Robert Birenbaum by Nikos Aliagas and a work by street artist Dugudus extend this reflection on the faces of the Resistance. The exhibition explores the role of images, stories and archives in bringing these journeys to light.
