Can an exhibition begin with two letters in common? With “5 Mo”, the MAC VAL brings together François Morellet, Charles-Henri Monvert, Jacques Monory, Bernard Moninot and Vera Molnár. The alphabetical connection provides a starting point for comparing how they construct an image, play by a rule or subvert it.
Conceived to mark the centenary of Morellet’s birth, this exhibition brings geometric abstraction and figuration into dialogue. The juxtaposition with Jacques Monory, associated with Narrative Figuration, invites us in particular to explore what brings seemingly distant works together. Crosses, lines and the use of neon offer several avenues for interpretation.
The announced works include Morellet’s Carrément décroché n°1, Moninot’s La serre and Molnár’s Crescendo/Decrescendo. Paintings, sculptures, drawings and installations thus give several forms to this exploration of the interplay between system, chance and accident.
The exhibition is curated by Nicolas Surlapierre, with Lahouari Mohammed Bakir as associate curator. It is part of the “Constellation” programme and the museum’s partnership with the Centre Pompidou. The exhibition invites visitors to observe how five distinctive approaches resonate with one another, without reducing their creators to a single art movement.
