How about (re)discovering theArc de Triomphe from its architectural angle? The Journées Nationales de l'Architecture, created in 2016, aim to raise awareness of the importance of architecture and built heritage. They offer everyone an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the challenges of construction and spatial planning, while showcasing the diversity of French architectural creations. This event is part of a wider program that celebrates this art form in many countries each year, reinforcing dialogue between cultures and raising awareness of the impact of architecture on society.
This ninth edition of the Journées Nationales de l'Architecture (National Architecture Days) gives visitors the chance to go behind the scenes of the construction of the Arc de Triomphe, the neoclassical masterpiece commissioned by Napoleon I in 1806 to celebrate the glory of the Grande Armée. The tours, in French, reveal fascinating anecdotes about the design of this colossal edifice, inaugurated in 1836 under Louis-Philippe, and which today stands as an inescapable symbol of the French capital.
The aim of the Journées Nationales de l'Architecture (National Architecture Days) is to raise awareness of architecture, by promoting the wealth of France's built heritage. During the weekend, the Arc de Triomphe opens its doors to visitors of all ages, from 6 years upwards, for an individual ticket price of €23.50, while children under 18 and people on certain social benefits benefit from a reduced ticket price of €6. The perfect opportunity to explore this monumental structure, its historical importance and its often overlooked architectural details.
The meeting point is ten minutes before the start of the tour (at 11 a.m. or 3 p.m.), in the tunnel leading to theArc de Triomphe, by the stone benches near the ticket office. From there, participants are guided through the monument's mysteries, from the foundations to the famous panoramic terrace offering a breathtaking view of Paris.
For those wishing to take part in this enriching experience, booking is compulsory via the Monuments Nationaux website. Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the history of one of France's most iconic monuments, for a weekend dedicated to architecture.
