In Christmas markets, on Christmas trees, on wrapping paper, or as decorations in homes: Nutcrackers are everywhere during the holiday season. But where does this special character come from? Let us tell you.

Santa Claus is not the only star of the holiday season. During this season, we encounter many other iconic characters, such as elves, snowmen, reindeer, and nutcrackers. But where do these nutcrackers come from? What is their origin, and how did they become such typical Christmas figures? Here's what history tells us...

The Nutcracker was originally... a nutcracker. A small kitchen accessory in the shape of a character, originating in Germany, which makes it easy to open nuts and hazelnuts.

However, the object used to crack nuts is much older. Aristotle (a philosopher who lived in the 4th century BC) is credited with inventing this tool. It can take many forms, from the most basic to the most artistic. Leonardo da Vinci is also said to have taken an interest in the object, creating a machine to make nutcracker figurines. This character, who cracks nuts with his mouth, was therefore already widespread in the 15th century.

The Nutcracker character as we know him appeared in 19th-century Germany: toy and wooden object manufacturing increased during this period, and artisans came up with a new figure for the Nutcracker. He took on the features and costumes of policemen, hussars, and political figures such as Napoleon I. These figures were often sold at Christmas markets in Germany , and the Nutcracker quickly became associated with the Christmas season.

The world of the arts quickly took up this figure: the Nutcracker appears in several 19th-century German Christmas tales and stories. Inspired by these creations, Alexandre Dumas (father) also wrote a story called The Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky adapted Dumas's tale into a ballet, the famous Nutcracker, which has been performed all over the world and is now one of the most popular ballets.

These works have greatly contributed to the fame of the Nutcracker and its spread throughout the world. The character has been featured in various works and is marketed in different forms. Today, the Nutcracker is mainly a collector's item and Christmas decoration, and has lost its original function.
