Come explore exquisite wooden sculptures and stunning gilding at the Ornamentalist’s workshop, located in the heart of the Industry Courtyard, during the European Heritage Crafts Days on April 11 and 12, 2026.

Are you passionate about craftsmanship? Then don't miss the European Crafts Days, taking place across France from April 7 to 12, 2026. In Paris and the Île-de-France region, many venues will open their doors unexpectedly to showcase their expertise, and sometimes even offer workshops to experience it firsthand. Whether it's stained glass, wood sculpture, cinema wigs, or art restoration, these professions are vital to preserve and promote.

Sometimes, these artists come together. One example is the Cour de l'industrie, also known as "the 37bis." It is the last remaining complex of 19th-century industrial courtyards, tucked away in the heart of the historic Faubourg Saint Antoine neighborhood in Paris. This site is truly exceptional, not only because of its history dating back to 1673 but also due to the ongoing activities there today: approximately fifty workshops for artisans and artists create an irreplaceable hub of activity within the urban landscape of the 11th arrondissement.

Among those residing here is L'Ornemaniste, the workshop of Sébastien Barbier, a skilled wood sculptor specializing in decorative carvings and gold leaf gilding. He will be opening his studio on April 11 and 12, 2026 to share his creations with visitors.

The 2026 JEMA Program at 37bis

An exceptional opportunity for the public to explore the diverse styles of French craftsmanship through a stunning collection of carved and gilded wooden pieces: consoles, picture frames, wall hangings, mirrors, barometers… all authentic antiques! Ongoing restoration work offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the intricate craft of restoring historic wooden art objects.

A collection of engravings of the Kings of France will also be showcased to highlight the evolution of fashion and furniture styles. Finally, after an explanation of the processes involved in wood carving and gilding with gold leaf, the artisan will set aside time to answer all audience questions.
