The museum offers a journey into the world of the “Green Fairy” and the 19th century. It showcases the discovery of absinthe and, more broadly, the spirit of an era defined by cafés, artists, and cultural vibrancy. Its presence in Auvers-sur-Oise is hardly random: the village is closely tied to the history of Impressionism and the memory of Vincent van Gogh.
The museum opened in June 1994 by Marie-Claude Delahaye, a renowned expert on absinthe, to house a collection devoted to this storied drink, long shrouded in myths, rituals, and instantly recognizable objects. But what tends to captivate botany enthusiasts most is its garden. It showcases the aromatic plants associated with absinthe and creates a direct bridge between the plant world and the history of taste, practice, and knowledge.
As part of the Rendez-vous aux jardins, the Absinthe Museum invites visitors to explore a human-scale site that is rooted in the history of Auvers-sur-Oise and oriented toward the plant world.
