A tiny pond, a children's playground (in fact several), neatly designed green spaces that offer a sense of tranquility for everyone, and above all, the feeling of being far, very far from the city. To indulge in this sense of detachment, you don’t need to escape to the countryside (or to the other side of the world): just slip into one of Paris’s secret gardens, including Square Léon Serpollet, nestled in the 18th arrondissement, and it’s part of the experience.
Created in 1991, the park is named after Léon Serpollet, a French industrialist of the 19th century (1858-1907) renowned for inventing the instant steam boiler (1881) and the steam tricycle (1888). He carried out his experiments on the lands of Madame Marzak, who later donated them to the City of Paris. Some of Léon Serpollet's prototypes are, in fact, among the permanent collections of the Musée des Arts et Métiers in the city.
On site, there are several play areas: one for younger children, and two other installations including a large spider climber for older kids. Numerous benches, chairs and relaxing nooks are scattered throughout the park, which also features a large basketball court. The garden’s landscaping puts the spotlight on flowers in summer and spring; several fountains have been installed to enhance your stroll through square Léon Serpollet.
The park has two entrances, one on Impasse des Cloÿs and another on Rue Marcadet. It’s easy to reach from central Paris by Vélib’ (a station right beside the park entrance) or by the Metro line 12 toward Aubervilliers (Jules Joffrin station) or by bus line 80 toward Mairie du 18e, alighting at Lamarck - Coulaincourt. The park is open every day, year-round, with hours that vary by season. Some parts of the square are accessible to wheelchair users and pushchairs.
