Also known as the Day of the Dead, Dia de Muertos is probably the best-known Mexican holiday in the world. It takes place, each year, on November 1 and 2 in Mexico and in many Mexican communities around the world, especially in the United States.
During Dia de Muertos, Mexicans celebrate the life and memory of their departed loved ones in a joyful, colorful way—first the children on November 1, followed by the adults on November 2.
Over these two days (and sometimes even for several weeks, depending on the region and village in Mexico), families set up altars to honor their deceased, adorned with a multitude of offerings; then head to the kitchen to prepare a whole spread of traditional dishes for the living and for the dead, before marching through the streets, faces painted.
