The Denfert-Rochereau district takes its name from the square of the same name. The epicenter of the 14th arrondissement, Place Denfert-Rochereau is home to Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's famous Lion of Belfort statue, commemorating the heroic resistance of the town of Belfort during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Up until the 1950s, the Lion de Belfort funfair was held here, where roller coasters, lotteries, merry-go-rounds and circuses were legion.
On either side of this square, formerly known as Place d'Enfer until 1879, you'll find Parisian landmarks such as the unmissable Paris catacombs, the Montparnasse cemetery, where you'll find the graves of Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Charles Baudelaire and Serge Gainsbourg, and the Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain .
For a stroll to discover the local shops, cafés and restaurants, there's nothing like rue Daguerre, so loved by filmmaker Agnès Varda. But if you want to take your relaxation even further, the Parc Montsouris is the place to go.
Designed in the 19th century, it's the ideal place to soak up the sun on its lawns and lakes, but also... to cultivate yourself! Indeed, several times a year, the Cité Universitaire de Paris opens its doors to the public with a diverse, varied and free program.
So, here's a list of the best places to go and things to do around Denfert-Rochereau and Parc Montsouris!
