Always on the hunt for the best hot chocolate in Paris, we went to try Dengo, a brand offering Brazilian hot chocolate with unique flavors such as tonka bean, Christmas spices, and Bahia pepper, prepared with oat milk. Three locations in the 6th arrondissement, Montmartre, and most recently in the Marais await those who love good cocoa and want to enjoy a gourmet moment.

If you're looking for hot chocolate that's out of the ordinary, we'll take you to Dengo, a Brazilian chocolate shop with three locations in Paris: in the 3rd arrondissement, the 6th arrondissement, and in Montmartre at Les Abesses. The newest location, in the Haut-Marais, opened its doors in early November 2025. We tried their creations and can tell you all about them: here, classic hot chocolate gives way to versions with Christmas spices, tonka beans, or Bahia pepper. And frankly, we were won over.

A quick note about Dengo for those who don't know it yet: this Brazilian brand doesn't do things by halves. Brazilian cocoa is grown in Cabruca, a system where cocoa trees grow peacefully in the shade of the Atlantic Forest. The result is cocoa that tastes great and respects biodiversity. On the ethical side, Dengo works directly with more than 190 small producers, paying them fairly, above market price, with additional quality bonuses. Created eight years ago, the brand has been B Corp certified since the beginning (renewed in 2023) and offers authentic farm-to-table chocolate: everything happens in Brazil, from cultivation to packaging.

Now let's talk about what we're really here for: hot chocolate. Forget the classic chocolate with whipped cream, here we're thinking outside the box. There are three versions to choose from: the Incontournable Cumaru with Brazilian tonka bean, the Feliz Natal with Christmas spices, and the Spicy Bahia with Bahia pepper. We have a soft spot for the latter. The pepper really brings out the aromas of the cocoa before you taste it, giving it incredible depth without any spiciness. It's surprising at first, but so good. The spiced version is sweeter and more comforting, with notes reminiscent of grandma's cookies. And the tonka? It will appeal to fans of Brazilian Cumaru, which brings that distinctive vanilla touch.

What do we really love about Dengo? The balance. The hot chocolate is not too sweet, perfectly balanced, allowing the cocoa to express itself fully. And it's made with oat milk, which makes all the difference in terms of digestion. No more feeling heavy after drinking overly rich hot chocolate. The texture is creamy without being thick, so you don't need a spoon to drink it. The result: you can enjoy it without feeling sick, as can happen with other brands. It's designed differently, lighter and healthier, but without sacrificing taste.

In terms of locations, Dengo has set up shop on Rue Bonaparte in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Rue Yvonne Le Tac in Abbesses, and most recently, in early November 2025, Rue Debelleyme in the Haut-Marais. One important detail: while all three locations offer their signature hot chocolates, only the first two have a real lounge area where you can sit and relax. In the Marais, you'll have to get yours to go. If we had to choose one, we'd head to Montmartre: it's the most spacious and has a comforting atmosphere.

The team is passionate and takes the time to help you discover the entire range. In terms of accompaniments, we tried several options and recommend the discovery platter (€9.50 for one person, €14.50 to share), which lets you sample an assortment of Quebra Quebra, Drageas, and Pépitas—perfect for discovering the different Dengo chocolates. We also fell in love with the panettone with 50% milk chocolate chips (€6.50), which is as moist as we like it and completes the seasonal menu. And for fans of Brazilian cakes, the bolo de Fubá (€6) remains a sure bet: this cornmeal cake served with guava paste offers a sweet and fruity combination that makes a change from classic Parisian desserts.

The atmosphere? Relaxed, a far cry from the stuffiness of some Parisian tea rooms. You feel like you're on a journey, with the bright colors of the packaging and the staff telling you the story of Brazilian cocoa. If you plan to return, take a look at the Dengo Prestige Card: a loyalty program that offers you a 10% discount after a few visits. Great for chocolate addicts.

In terms of prices, expect to pay between €7.90 and €8.90 for a Dengo hot chocolate, depending on the size (Dengoso 16cl or Dengosão 21cl). Want whipped cream? Add €1. We admit it, we couldn't resist. For those with a sweet tooth, the €2.50 tasting supplement allows you to enjoy an extra 20g of Dengo chocolate. It's not cheap, we admit, but the quality is there, as is the ethical commitment. You can also take home bars or candies to prolong the pleasure at home.

In short, if you're looking for a great place to warm up this winter without falling back on the same old spots, Dengo is definitely worth a visit. The Brazilian approach to hot chocolate is a refreshing change from the Parisian classics. Plus, knowing that every cup helps producers earn a decent living from their work makes it even more enjoyable. We've given you our opinion, now it's up to you to try it and make up your own mind! If we had to find one criticism, it would be that the cups are a little small, but that was enough for us. Those with a big appetite might feel a little frustrated.
