Café de la Paix is one of the capital's most famous café-restaurants. With its terrace overlooking the Opéra Garnier, its listed room and its emblematic green, it's one of those landmarks that make up the soul of Paris. Since 2021, the famous French institution has undergone a complete overhaul, and is once again unveiling its beautiful charms.
Interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon orchestrated the restoration of the Café de la Paix. His mission? Topreserve the soul and heritage of the Café de la Paix, while adding a touch of modernity. A goal largely achieved, as the new design brings much more luminosity to the place.
The architect decided to preserve the restaurant's two ambiances. On the Boulevard des Capucinesside, the largedining room features fluted columns and coffered ceilings with painted skies. The dark wood furnishings include Louis XVI-style armchairs upholstered in cream-colored leather, green velvet banquettes, all embellished with touches of gold and a profusion of lighting fixtures that enhance the volume and majesty of the space.
On the Place de l'Opéra side, Pierre-Yves Rochon invites Parisians of all ages to enjoy a drink, lunch or pastry in a winter garden setting . The bleached oak furniture matches the foliage-printed cushions and straw-like fabrics on the walls. The floor carpet is inspired by a foliage design by Madeleine Castaing, famous decorator of Saint-Germain-des-Prés from the 1930s to the 1980s.
And on theplate, Chef Laurent André, a Jurassien trained byAlain Chapel and Alain Ducasse, offers fine recipes from the French culinary arts, reinterpreted with brio and modernity. Café de la Paix's famous onion soup, made to the same recipe as when it first opened in 1862, is of course still on the menu.
Café de la Paix menu:
Laurent André's two menus, Retour du Marché and Découverte en cinq plats, feature local produce. The menu features a wide range of quality dishes, including duck foie gras confit, lobster quenelles, veal chop casserole, scallops marinated in lemon caviar...
Sweet tooths are not to be outdone, with a host of fine in-house pastries on the program. Among them, the two stars of the house: the millefeuille caramelized à la minute and theopera of course, both presented in a version that is inevitably greedy and intense in flavor.
The Hôtel Intercontinental Le Grand, home to the famous address, also welcomes you under its newly renovated glass roof to sample the signature dishes of the Café de la Paix and (re)discover the creations ofChef Laurent André. The hotel also offers a number of historic or signature suites that have taken advantage of the pandemic to give themselves a fresh new look.
And last but not least, don't miss the incredible Sunday brunch at Café de la Paix, which rhymes profusion and gourmet delights.
