To celebrate its reopening after undergoing renovations for two years, the Théâtre du Châtelet programs a musical and a good one at that, “An American in Paris”. The musical created by siblings Ira and George Gershwin from Tuesday to Sunday and from November 28, 2019 to January 1, 2020.
Released in 1951, the Vincente Minnelli movie starring Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron, Oscar Levant and Georges Guétary only became a musical in 2014, when it was created at the Théâtre du Châtelet already. Since then, the show has been won several awards – including 4 Tony Awards – and met success worldwide (England, the United States, Japan…).
“An American in Paris” is about Jerry Mulligan (Gene Kelly in the movie), an American GI who remained in Paris after the war and who wants to become a painter. He pursues his art ambitions with two friends, but none of the three friends realizes that they all are in love with a dancer, Lise, who quickly becomes their muse, while she’s promised to another man.
The version performed in 2019 is the same than the one in 2014, with choreographies created by Christopher Wheeldon in tribute to Gene Kelly, and Gershwin’s music. The show will be performed in English with French surtitles.
If you haven’t had the chance yet to see “An American in Paris” live, it’s the perfect moment to do so and think about it for the Holidays.
