Every year, the Place Vendôme welcomes a unique work for FIAC, this contemporary art week in Paris. After the scandalous Tree by McCarthy in 2014 and the strange stars by Elmgreen & Dragset last year, here’s that the bubbly Yayoi Kusama is expected from October 14, 2019 with a giant pumpkin.
The 90-year-old Japanese artist is known worldwide for her impressive immersive installations! After over 70 years of career, she keeps on creating psychedelic works. We saw her in 2011 during the Yayoi Kusama retrospective at Centre Pompidou and more recently at the Louis Vuitton Foundation.
For the Place Vendôme, the artist signs her biggest creation ever: a 10-m wide pumpkin. Why a pumpkin? This shape has been around a lot in Kusama’s works since her family used to grow this vegetable in Matsumoto and the artist spent her childhood near kabocha squash fields.
Yayoi Kusama is happy: “I’ll be delighted to show my work at the Place Vendôme, an historic square as beautiful as meaningful and I wish to share the message of love and peace of my art with Parisians and people from all over the world”.
