Since 1991, a funicular railway has made climbing to Montmartre's Sacré-Coeur easier than climbing hundreds of steps! Two handy automatic cabins run by the RATP, but which have to undergo maintenance work from time to time to refurbish them and avoid tragedies. So, since the end of May and until June 4, 2025, the funicular, which climbs 36m in less than 1m30, has been at a standstill, much to the chagrin of tourists who need to get some exercise!
This is neither the first nor the last time, as between 2017 and 2019, it underwent three years of work to modernize the interior. The cabins are overhauled every ten years, so it's only a matter of time before the funicular stops again for its next major refurbishment in 2027 and 2028. Fortunately, however, the cabins are not removed at the same time for inspection, and if you have to wait patiently to get on, there's always every other cabin to take you to the top of Montmartre.
And what are 222 steps after all?
