Rising summer temperatures are turning Parisian nights into "tropical" furnaces. In the capital, urbanization amplifies the heat. How can we cope?

In recent years, heat waves have become increasingly regular and long-lasting. A heatwave is defined as an episode of high temperatures day and night over a prolonged period, fromthree consecutivedays and nights , where the temperature does not fall below 20 degrees. These are known as"tropical" heatwaves, and although they used to be very common in the south of France, they are now becoming more widespread in the Paris region.

Except that in the countryside, they're generally much better tolerated, thanks to the greenery. In the capital, it's a little more difficult because of theurban heat island effect. These very hot nights can be detrimental to the health of vulnerable groups such as the elderly and sick, pregnant women and young children, as their bodies have difficulty recovering from very hot days.

In the city center, streets let in less air and materials release the heat of the day at nightfall, resulting in several degrees of difference between Paris and the suburbs or the Bois de Vincennes and Bois de Boulogne. To prevent this, it's a bit complicated, since you need to keep the windows closed until it's cooler outside than at home, to see just how useful a fan really is.

In this case, you can place it opposite the window, bringing cooler air into your home. Without air-conditioning in the home, it's hard to get the temperature down before then, bearing in mind that more pleasant temperatures arrive late, often in the night. You can also put a wet cloth on yourself or your pillow to help you fall asleep, close the shutters if you have them... and don't forget tohydrate regularly during the day!
