This Thursday, November 13, Paris will gather to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the attacks of November 13, 2015. A special ceremony will be held in the brand-new memorial garden, inaugurated for the occasion at Place Saint-Gervais in the 4th arrondissement, just behind City Hall. Broadcast live on France 2 and TF1from 6 p.m., as well as on a giant screen at Place de la République (11th arrondissement), this tribute promises to be particularly moving. The event will last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and will bring together some 1,500 guests, including survivors, families of victims, elected officials, magistrates, as well as police officers and members of the emergency services who responded that night when 132 people lost their lives and hundreds more were injured.
Thierry Reboul, already artistic director of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games ceremonies, has been chosen to orchestrate this commemoration. He wanted to preserve the spirit of the annual ceremonies: one song for the dead, one for the living. Reboul has surrounded himself with a team of recognized talents, with Thomas Dechandon on lighting, Blanca Li on choreography, Lola Breig and Étienne Guiol on set design, and Mossi Traoré on styling. Victor Le Masne, composer of the Olympic anthem "Parade," was entrusted with the musical direction and specially created a "Requiem des Lumières" for this tribute.
This requiem will be performed by the Radio France choir, composed of 66 singers spread out on the steps of the Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais church, accompanied by the Republican Guard orchestra. The program will also feature several pieces by the Chœur du 13, a choir created especially for this anniversary, which brings together some forty members of the victims' associations Life for Paris and 13onze15 Fraternité et liberté, both of which were actively involved in organizing the ceremony.
Several speeches will punctuate the evening, including those by the President of the Republic, the Mayor of Paris, and representatives of victims' associations. The program remains deliberately confidential to preserve the element of surprise, as does the identity of most of the artists who will be performing. What we do know is that an impressive stage design has been created around an elm tree planted in the center of the memorial garden, symbolizing justice. A video projection system will highlight the tree, while a modern organ installed at its base will accompany several scenes of the ceremony.
Yesterday and again today, Paris is decked out in the colors of the French flag: City Hall, the Eiffel Tower, and the statue in Place de la République will be illuminated in blue, white, and red. After the official ceremony, from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., the garden of remembrance will remain open to guests who wish to pay their respects at this site now dedicated to the memory of the victims.
In short, if you can't make it to Place Saint-Gervais or Place de la République, tune in to France 2 or TF1 at 6 p.m. to watch this historic commemoration marking ten years since a tragedy that profoundly affected Paris and all of France.
