This summer, users of Parisian and Île-de-France public transport must adapt to a wave of underground works. While the République station is closed on line 8 until April 2027, the Nation station will not be served by the RER A until August 30 inclusive.

On the RER B, no trains run between Bourg-la-Reine and Gare du Nord from July 25 to August 6. In addition, service is reduced until August 16 between the Mitry-Claye / Aéroport CDG2 stations and Gare du Nord, with trains originating from and terminating at Paris Nord.

Rail works are also disrupting traffic on the RER D. Here, no trains will run between Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon from July 25 to August 16, while service will be reduced on the same dates.

Two Paris Metro lines at risk of overcrowding this summer

Due to major works on the RER B and D in central Paris, the RATP warns of potential crowding on two metro lines. It’s the lines 4 and 5.

From July 25 to August 16, 2026, heavy passenger traffic is expected on Line 4, between Gare du Nord and Châtelet. On Line 5, commuters should anticipate a risk of congestion between Gare du Nord and Bastille.

What are the alternatives?

So what are the alternatives, and which metro lines should you prioritise from July 25 through August 16 to dodge the heavy crowding on lines 4 and 5?

To travel between Gare du Nord and Châtelet - Les Halles, the recommended option is to take Line 7 from Poissonnière to Châtelet, or the RER E from Magenta to Haussmann - Saint-Lazare, then Line 14 to Châtelet. Alternatively, opt for Bus 38 from Gare du Nord to Châtelet.

If you need to get from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon and vice versa, Île-de-France Mobilités advises travelers to take the RER E from Magenta to Haussmann - Saint-Lazare, then the Line 14 to Gare de Lyon, or alternatively Bus 91 from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon.

Finally, for commuters wishing to reach Châtelet from Gare de Lyon and vice versa, the Line 14 is the recommended option during this period of works.
