Since waking up on Saturday, August 1, 2026, many residents of Val-d'Oise, Yvelines, and even as far as Hauts-de-Seine report a strong smell of smoke. The phenomenon is linked to a major fire that broke out overnight in the area. Here’s what we know so far.

Did you catch a whiff of something burning when you opened your windows Saturday morning? The smell is tied to a fire that broke out overnight near the Argenteuil industrial zone in the Val-d’Oise. The blaze is believed to have started around 2 a.m. and then grew in intensity. Several videos circulating on social media show stunning flames and a thick plume of smoke, visible from several kilometres away from the site.

The smoke then drifted with the wind, which could explain the numerous reports logged as people woke up in several towns across western Île-de-France. The odor was notably detected in parts of Val-d’Oise, the northern Yvelines, and even in several areas of Hauts-de-Seine.

Firefighters battled the blaze overnight to bring the incident under control and limit its spread. Despite their efforts, smoke was still rising at daybreak, as rescue operations continued in the area.

It remains advisable for the time being to stay away from the outskirts of Argenteuil's industrial zone, to avoid hindering emergency responders and because of the risks posed by a fire at an industrial site. New information is expected in the morning about the fire’s evolution, its origin, and any potential consequences for nearby residents.
