Jacques Audiard's Emilia Perez in Official Competition at Cannes 2024

It's eagerly awaited at every Cannes Film Festival selection. And the timing is perfect, since Jacques Audiard's new film, Emilia Perez, has been selected for official competition at Cannes 2024. And the cast - Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, alongside Karla Sofía Gascón and Edgar Ramírez - is as intriguing as the script.

Overqualified and overexploited, Rita uses her talents as a lawyer in the service of a big firm more interested in laundering criminals than serving justice. But an unexpected way out opens up for her: to help cartel boss Manitas retire from the business and carry out the plan he's been hatching in secret for years: to finally become the woman he's always dreamed of being.

Freely adapted from a book by Boris Razon, Emilia Perez is a musical comedy in the running for the Palme d'Or.

"The title has a Hispanic ring to it, and for good reason! It's a musical among the Mexican cartels. I won't say any more about it, so as not to take over the film's marketing strategies, but it will allow us to welcome Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, who we're delighted to have on board," said Thierry Frémaux at the press conference on April 11.
