Here's a film that should wake up the Croisette. Coralie Fargeat's new feature, The Substance, will compete in the official selection for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes 2024 Festival. It has to be said that the French director knows what she's doing: her first film, Revenge, both gory and radical, left a lasting impression.
No information has been released about The Substance, apart from its all-American cast: Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, the daughter of Andie MacDowell, seen in Yórgos Lánthimos'Poor Creatures and, more recently, Ethan Coen's Drive-Away Dolls. The young actress will also be present on the Croisette for another film in official competition: Kinds of Kindness by Yórgos Lánthimos.
"It's a genre film, a gore film, an assertive body horror. Wear protection, because at the end there's a lot of blood on the screen, it looks like it's going through the screen! Coralie Fargeat - who made a name for herself with her debut film The Revenge - enters the competition. When you make genre cinema, you have to be a great filmmaker to make it work, and that's the case with Coralie Fargeat; she completely belongs in the competition this year," explained Thierry Frémaux at the festival press conference. Enough to intrigue!
