This is the seventh time Christophe Honoré has presented a film at Cannes. His last appearance on the Croisette was in 2019, with Chambre 212, selected in the Un Certain Regard section, but you have to go back to 2018, with Plaire, aimer et courir vite, to find the French director in Official Competition.
Christophe Honoré's new film, Marcello Mio, marks his return to official competition at Cannes 2024. It's the story of a woman named Chiara. She's an actress, the daughter of Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve, and for one summer, when her own life is in turmoil, she decides she'd rather live her father's life. She dresses like him, talks like him, breathes like him, and she does it so forcefully that the others around her start to believe it, calling her "Marcello".
"Marcello is Marcello Mastroianni, whose 100th birthday is being celebrated this year. In the film, it's obviously not him but his daughter, Chiara, who decides to take a journey into the skin, the shadow and the mind of her father. Catherine Deneuve, who plays in the film, is astonished. And then there's this little team, Fabrice Luchini, Benjamin Biolay and Melvil Poupaud, who are all men dear to Chiara Mastroianni's life. It's a fiction, not a documentary, but it's a real story," emphasized Thierry Frémaux at the festival press conference.
