Open-air cinema at Château d'Auvers: three summer evenings around Van Gogh (95)

This summer, the Château d'Auvers invites you to three free outdoor screenings in its garden in the heart of the Val-d'Oise. Echoing the current exhibition, the program pays tribute to Van Gogh through two biopics and a Japanese animated film.

Open-air cinemas are set to fill your summer evenings throughout the Ile-de-France region. In the Val d'Oise, in the bucolic town ofAuvers-sur-Oise , home to the famous painter Van Gogh, the Château d'Auvers invites you into its pretty garden for three evenings of cinema, free of charge and open to all but subject to registration, not to be missed until the Friday before each session.

Echoing the Van Gogh, The Last Journeys exhibition, which is still on view, two films retrace the painter's life and his relationship with his brother Theo: Vincente Minnelli's Lust for Life (1956) and Robert Altman's Vincent et Théo (1990). Makoto Shinkai's Suzume (2022), a Japanese animated film, echoes Van Gogh's fascination with Japanese prints.

Lust for Life by Vincente Minnelli - 1956 - 122 minutes

Before Pialat, Minnelli was the first to bring the tormented life of Vincent van Gogh to the screen. The film traces his journey from the Borinage mines in Belgium, where he sought his vocation in 1878, to his suicide in Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890. A classic, powerful and moving fresco.

Vincent and Theo by Robert Altman - 1990 - 204 minutes

At the age of 28, Van Gogh left his family to devote himself to painting. Living with his brother Theo in Paris, he entered a dark period marked by alcoholism and tensions with Gauguin. The film explores in depth the unbreakable bond between the two brothers: Vincent, tormented genius; Théo, unfailing support. A poignant, introspective work.

Suzume by Makoto Shinkai - 2022 - 122 minutes

In a quiet Kyushu town, 17-year-old Suzume meets a man looking for a mysterious door. Intrigued, she follows him and discovers a magical opening in the heart of the ruins. By opening it, she unleashes disasters all over Japan. And so begins her journey of initiation through space and time, guided by these enigmatic doors.
