This fourth title in the series is distinguished by its franchise-typical gameplay, in which players take on the role of a legendary treasure hunter in search of a mysterious alien treasure. Faithful to the spirit of Borderlands, this new opus offers a mix of frenetic action and looting of all kinds, all set in an ever richer and crazier universe. The trailer unveiled at Gamescom offered a first glimpse of one of the new planets that players will be able to explore, revealing a variety of environments and increasingly formidable enemies.
According to Randy Pitchford, founder and president of Gearbox Entertainment Company, the team has long had grandiose ambitions for the franchise:"The Gearbox team and I have wanted to do a lot with Borderlands ever since we introduced the shooter-looter genre to the world with our original game," he explains. He continues:"Everyone at Gearbox has big ambitions for Borderlands 4, and are working hard to make everything we love about Borderlands better than ever, while taking the game to new levels with exciting new directions."
Our review of Borderlands 4:
A release we've been looking forward to! Even though it's full of flaws, Borderlands 4 reminds us why we loved the franchise so much. Graphically speaking, we still love this very comic-book art direction, which is also very marked, making the whole thing quite fluid... That's if you're playing on consoles, since on PC, in all likelihood, it's an obstacle course.
In terms of gameplay, Gearbox has not fallen back into the trap of optimization (cuckoo Borderlands 3...), offering a more than welcome overhaul of the mechanics, with extremely enjoyable gunplay. The arsenal of weapons is as varied as ever, and it won't be difficult to find what you're looking for to defeat the various enemies encountered along the way. Otherwise, we're back to what makes the franchise so special: heroes with specific powers... Nothing new on the horizon, but it works.
On the other hand, we regret that the humor is more discreet, less irreverent and more restrained than in the other opuses of the franchise, and that the story is less developed, preferring the gruff side of combat. A choice we might not have made, but one that seems consistent with everything else. As for the open world, it's a good idea on paper, but the realization can be confusing (thanks to the energy barriers that prevent you from getting through...). An open world that isn't really an open world, but the first part of the map is so large that you can still see what's coming.
The fact remains that Borderlands 4 is a relatively good game, and will undoubtedly please fans of the franchise!
With over 87 million copies sold worldwide, the Borderlands franchise has established itself as an essential pillar of the video game industry. Catharina Lavers Mallet, Senior Vice President and General Manager of 2K Core Games, expressed her excitement about the future of the franchise, saying:"We're thrilled to be able to share with our fans that 2025 will mark a massive year for 2K and Gearbox Entertainment. The Borderlands series is one of 2K's most successful franchises and is enjoyed by millions of people around the world."
