Textile takes over Bastille with La Re-prise de la Bastille, an installation of 196 flags made from used clothes and unfurled around the July Column during Paris Design Week, from September 9 to 20, 2026.

For a few days, Paris reads like a life-size map of contemporary design. Paris Design Week keeps design moving from one district to the next, from galleries to heritage sites, from studios to public spaces, with installations that play as much with form as with use. The route offers a chance to discover fresh talents, spot the trends shaping the sector, and see how designers and maisons reinvent materials, objects and the way we inhabit the city, from September 10 to 19, 2026.

Une œuvre textile monumentale autour de la Colonne de Juillet à Bastille pour la Paris Design Week 2026 — Studio 5.5

Textiles reclaim space in Bastille. After a first foray in 2025, when Aude Franjou had grown her Coraux de la Liberté in the inner rotunda of the base of the Colonne de Juillet, the material returns to the open air with The Re-take of the Bastille, to be unveiled on the place from September 9 to 20, 2026. Conceived by Claire Renard and Jean-Sébastien Blanc of the Studio 5.5, in partnership with Festival du Monde and Refashion, the monumental installation unfolds around the column with 196 flags made from discarded clothing. The 195 UN member and observer states rub shoulders with a white flag, in a fabric play where fragments, colors and memories are stitched together by multiple voices. The choice of Bastille Square is no accident: liberty, revolution and coexistence find a new banner here, while reuse takes to new heights and reminds us that a garment at the end of its life can still be reshaped... and even become a work of art.
And since the principle is precisely to leave nothing to waste, the flags will be given a new life alongside the installation: each will be auctioned on Drouot.com, also from September 9 to 20, 2026.
