Japan takes over the Musée des Arts Décoratifs for Paris Design Week 2026. From September 10, four French designers will reveal the creations born from their Kyoto residency, along a curated trail on view through January 2027.

During Paris Design Week, design takes over the city, even stepping into the museums. From September 10 to 19, 2026, studios, galleries, institutions and even less expected venues invite the curious to explore furniture, materials, craftsmanship and contemporary creation. At the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, creativity shifts its gaze to Japan this time. From September 10, 2026, the institution unveils Paris > Kyoto > Paris. Four designers back from Japan, a show bringing together Nina Fradet, Tony Jouanneau, Felipe Ribon and Marion Vidal, all former residents of Kyoto’s Villa Kujoyama. About twenty works and installations born out of their sojourn in Japan will sit among the museum’s permanent collections. That said, there’s no aim to merely reproduce Nipponese codes: each designer filters them through their own lens, at the crossroads of design, craft, science, architecture, and fashion.

Dialogue with Japanese know‑how also passes through the materials and the gestures. Trained in cabinetmaking at the École Boulle, Nina Fradet blends woodwork with takezaiku, the traditional Japanese bamboo-weaving art, in sculptures inspired by the fibers of the human body. Tony Jouanneau focuses on textile and life: his series ECHIRO pairs shibori with pigments drawn notably from sea urchins and with plant and mineral dyes. Felipe Ribon takes a more olfactory tack with sculptural censers drawn from the Japanese incense culture, while Marion Vidal explores bamboo through jewelry and installation with her Cérémonie du bijou, nourished in particular by the observation of the tea ceremony.

Paris Design Week will wrap up on September 19, but the exhibition is extending its run. Paris > Kyoto > Paris remains on display at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs until January 3, 2027, as part of the "Sur invitation / Design" program launched by the institution in 2025 to make more room for emerging talent. And unlike many Paris Design Week events, this presentation is not free: because it occupies the museum’s permanent galleries, it is accessible with the museum collections ticket.
