Standing as an essential fixture of Paris's cultural scene, this building is as loved as it is debated — home to Europe’s largest collection of modern and contemporary art. The Centre Pompidou is an iconic Parisian landmark that has now closed its doors to the public. Until 2030, the institution is undergoing major renovation works. But what will happen to the museum’s priceless collection during this period? And who might step in to fill the void left by Paris’s premier modern and contemporary art museum?
A new cultural hub in Île-de-France takes the baton. The Centre Pompidou Francilien – Fabrique de l’Art is set to open to the public in spring 2027 in the town of Massy, in the Essonne department (91). This new cultural hotspot spans 30,000 square meters, with architecture by PCA-STREAM, and is meant to echo the vibe of the original Centre Pompidou site.
“The exhibition spaces open to the public feature a wooden balcony overlooking the park, offering a viewpoint reminiscent of how visitors admire the Beaubourg district from the Centre’s terraces. On the second floor, a lookout terrace crowns the canopy and hosts public events; its wooden staircase on the facade alludes to Pompidou’s iconic ‘caterpillar’. The building’s proportions subtly echo the historic structure, particularly when it reflects in the lake, creating a harmonious dialogue,” explains the architecture firm.
This new venue, sprawling in scale, will host workshops and storage spaces for several cultural sites. The Fabrique de l'Art aims to showcase the collections of the Centre Pompidou as well as those of the musée d'Art moderne de Paris. A 3 300 m² area will be dedicated to welcoming the public, with cultural and exhibition spaces, including a café-librairie.
The new art space is set to offer a vibrant program for visitors: workshops, temporary exhibitions, screenings, performances, and multi-disciplinary events.
The town of Massy is easily reachable from Paris via the RER B. The venue should also be just a few minutes' walk from Massy-Opéra station, and from the future Metro 18 line. The collections of the Centre Pompidou are worth a quick train trip... Built on the parc de la Blanchette, it should thus become a new, vibrant hub for life in Massy! We can’t wait to discover it next spring.
