Attention fashion enthusiasts - on the weekend of January 25 to 26, 2025, a free exhibition dedicated to Martin Margiela will unpack iconic looks in a disused building in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. Organized by Maurice Auction and Kerry Taylor Auctions, this fashion expo, just before Haute Couture Fashion Week, precedes the largest auction ever dedicated to the designer, which takes place on January 27.
In a raw atmosphere faithful to the Belgian designer's radical universe, this exhibition brings together over 270 pieces dating from 1988 to 1994. Expect to come across cult collections such as Spring-Summer 1990 - with its oversized vests transformed into dresses, suits with "cigarette" shoulders and transparent vinyl tops - or "curtain" skirts from Autumn-Winter 1991. Never-seen-before, never-worn, never-marketed, even models still in their original packaging. In short, an autopsy of Margiela's DNA, the essence of deconstructivist fashion.
Behind this unique collection are two sisters, Angela and Elena Picozzi. Inspired by their mother, Graziella Picozzi, an Italian fashion figure and Margiela's early supporter, they have gathered and pampered these garments like true relics. Each piece, from the most avant-garde to the most casual, recounts the genius of a designer who reinvented fashion with his raw cuts, visible seams and deconstructed shapes.
The exhibition doesn't stop at iconic silhouettes, but also reveals the other side of the creative process, with original patterns, facsimile sketches and rare documents. Among them, archives of the "!" project launched in 1988-1989 by Margiela prior to the creation of his House. Delving into the designer's visionary and enigmatic spirit has never been easier!
Fashion, archives and history come together in an exhibition that's as accessible as it is essential!
