Do you know Hangar Y ? It's a historic site located in Meudon, in the Hauts-de-Seine department, in the heart of the Observatoire park. Built in 1879 to house an airship, it was in fact one of the world's first balloon hangars, and has now been converted into a unique cultural venue combining art, science and nature.
This exceptional site combines industrial heritage and contemporary creation, with programming open to all audiences, in an architectural setting emblematic of French aeronautical history. The 10-hectare park, a veritable green lung, is the perfect place to discover the contemporary open-air art trail , which has just been enriched with new works.
The Hangar Y contemporary exhibition is an open-air tour featuring some twenty renowned artists and some of the biggest names in architecture and design. Since the site opened in March 2023, Hangar Y has never ceased to amaze: nearly 250,000 visitors have already strolled along its paths, lined with works that are both playful and contemplative. Stroll through a park designed in the 17th century by André Le Nôtre, where contemporary sculptures, ponds and reed beds interact harmoniously.
In this soothing setting, surrounded by trees and a central pond, you can disconnect from the city. After a visit to the Hangar (or not) to discover its new installations and activities, you can treat yourself to an unusual exhibition. Note that access to the park and its works is free on weekdays, Monday to Friday, 11am to 7pm. On weekends, access to the park is available at an affordable price of €3.
As we stroll along, we come across astonishing works by Subodh Gupta, Carlos Cruz-Diez and Joana Vasconcelos. Children will marvel at Jeremy Deller 's chameleon slide, while adults will be captivated by Laure Prouvost's daydreams. At every turn, art meets nature: Pablo Reinoso 's benches invite us to take a dreamy break, Marta Pan 's floating sculptures intrigue us. This year, the opening of the pavilions to design by Kengo Kuma and Odile Decq adds a new dimension to the site.
An original sensory mediation, La Traversée, offered free of charge from Monday to Friday, plunges us even deeper into the world of the artists, thanks to a bone-conduction audioguide. You can discover five installations through an immersive sound creation.
Sculptures by Ghada Amer, Erwin Wurm and Lionel Sabatté question our perception of the world, from dreamlike to socially engaged.
The artistic program continues in parallel with Envolées fantastiques, a cultural season running until September 21, 2025. Creative workshops, acrobatic shows, choreographic performances: everything is designed to extend the park experience in the great nave of Hangar Y. You can attend Vertige, a Nuit Blanche under the stars or La Ville Dansée orchestrated by Benjamin Millepied.
A walk not to be missed, just a few minutes from Paris, to discover contemporary art in a different way. The perfect place to stroll with friends or family in fine weather. On site, you can also discover Les Roseaux restaurant, where Laura Portelli and Christophe Saintagne offer gourmet, local and seasonal cuisine. In summer, a festive "guinguette" (dance hall) awaits you for moments of relaxation.
