It's a fact: watches both frighten and fascinate us. These individuals or creatures with their frightening appearance or behavior have always been exploited in the history of art. Mythical films such asFrankenstein,Beauty and the Beast and theElephant Man come to mind. Monsters can also be found in literature and painting, with the fascinating canvases of Hieronymus Bosch. In 2026, La Villette in Paris is launching a new event dedicated to digital art, the first of which will be devoted to"monsters 2.0".
On view at the Grande Halle de La Villette from May 26 to June 28, 2026, this exhibition - entitled " Freaks! - has been conceived " as a series of funfair attractions in reference to the 'freak shows' of the 19th century ", reads the official website.
To this end, Charles Carcopino, video artist and artistic director of this ground-breaking event, intends to highlight these new monsters born of contemporary technological upheavals. For, as this exhibition points out,"every era generates its monsters". These include the threat of artificial intelligence and robots that could turn against mankind, as well as the promise of extended life offered by transhumanism... Examples abound, giving rise to a confusion between reality and imagination generated by the invasion of digital technology into our lives.
" Freaks! " aims to deconstruct some of these fears, while highlighting the complexity of these"monsters 2.0". Join us from May 26 to June 28, 2026 at the Grande Halle de La Villette to discover this unique artistic and digital experience. Please note that tickets for this event will open shortly.
