In September 2026, the Palace of Versailles will mark the twentieth anniversary of Sofia Coppola's film "Marie Antoinette" with a special exhibition. Showcased at the Petit Trianon and its grounds—an intimate setting historically connected to the queen and featured in many scenes of the film—the exhibit aims to take visitors behind the scenes of this cinematic masterpiece through exceptional artworks and artifacts.
From original costumes by Milena Canonero to shoes designed by Manolo Blahnik, and including film shoot accessories, storyboards, annotated scripts, behind-the-scenes photographs, and set sketches, the movie is brought to life right before visitors’ eyes. Not typically experienced in a museum setting, this exhibition on cinema takes place inside the heart of the Château de Versailles—a location frequently featured in international film productions.
Additionally, projections will offer the chance to revisit filmed sequences shot directly within the rooms where they were created, delivering a singular immersive experience that blends historical space with cinematic reinterpretation. The film Marie-Antoinette, now a cult classic, has significantly shaped the public image of the last queen, elevating her to cultural icon status—thanks in part to its distinctive aesthetic, which earned the film the Oscar for Best Costumes in 2007.
