You may not know his name, but you’ve surely admired his designs. Amédée Couder was an artist and textile designer who left a lasting mark on his era, and whose work is still celebrated today. Come discover his story and his works at the Toile de Jouy Museum, from June 19, 2026 to January 10, 2027.
The Yvelines Museum is hosting the exhibition Amédée Couder, Designer for Fabrics. The Origins of Textile Design in the 19th Century: a tour that brings together more than 50 textile, graphic and technical works, and numerous archival documents. Across this show, visitors can admire and appreciate the genius of Amédée Couder, and learn more about the textile industry and Parisian manufactories in the 19th century.
Orient-inspired motifs, florals, bold color palettes, and symmetrical patterns: Amédée Couder captivated an entire industry in the 19th century with his designs. Even more, he left a lasting mark on this world through his working methods. He founded his own studio for motif creation and employed several artists. In short, he was an independent creator who sold his services to manufacturers and the textile industries—a status then unique in the field.
Through his motifs, his techniques, and his entrepreneurial drive, Amédée Couder emerged as a defining figure in the world of textile design. His legacy endures today, and his influence remains evident among today’s industrial designers. The Toile de Jouy Museum has enriched the exhibition route with contemporary creations that testify to this artistic heritage.
