Originally serving as a simple hunting lodge, built by Louis VII around 1150 within the Vincennes Forest, the Château de Vincennes evolved over the centuries into a stately manor commissioned by Philippe Auguste and Saint Louis. By 1337, King Philip VI of Valois decided to strengthen the site by constructing a donjon to the west of the manor. Standing at 52 meters tall, it remains the largest medieval fortress in Europe.
This medieval castle, renowned for its role as a royal residence in the 14th century, has served as a prison from the 16th to the 19th centuries: notable figures such as Fouquet, Marquis de Sade, and Mirabeau were held here. Converted into a barracks under Napoleon I, the fortress was built to defend Paris and remains the headquarters of the Department of Defense’s Historical Service today. Visitors can still explore the King’s Apartments, the Sainte-Chapelle, and even the upper levels of the Keep!
Built in 1379, the Sainte-Chapelle follows the design of the original Sainte-Chapelle in the Île de la Cité in Paris. However, it features only one level, with the sculptures on the west portal standing as a stunning example of 15th-century craftsmanship. Since 1988, a comprehensive renovation initiative has been underway at Vincennes Castle.
Today, the site hosts a variety of events that breathe new life into this historic landmark. From concerts and guided tours to live performances, every occasion offers a chance to (re)discover this majestic monument, deeply woven into the story of Paris!
