In Seine-et-Marne, the Blandy-les-Tours castle stands out as an exception. With its ramparts, its towers, its moats and its fortress-like air, it ranks among the last major witnesses to medieval military architecture in Île-de-France.

Seeing a genuine medieval castle still standing in the Île-de-France region is not something you see every day. That’s precisely what makes Blandy-les-Tours in Seine-et-Marne so distinctive. For readers with an interest in medieval castles in Île-de-France, military heritage, or fortresses of the Middle Ages near Paris, the site is well worth a visit. With its tall towers, ramparts, enceinte, and moats, it offers a near-life-size glimpse of medieval defensive architecture. This is a rare surviving example of medieval military architecture in Île-de-France, alongside the Château de Vincennes and the château de Dourdan.

Its history began in the 13th century, when the viscounts of Melun ordered the construction of an initial enclosure around a fortified manor. This early enclosure, still visible to the north, traced a semi-circular layout and already featured several towers as well as a moat. Later, the site was transformed, expanded and strengthened. During the guerre de Cent Ans, Blandy becomes a true château fort, adapted to the defensive needs of its time.

We can see how a fortified manor house evolved into a more ambitious fortress, with more assertive defensive features. The curtain walls were raised, new towers were added, and a new keep appeared. The castle offers a lens into the evolution of medieval military architecture.

In Île-de-France, many medieval castles have been transformed, dismantled, or absorbed by later constructions. Blandy, by contrast, has kept the silhouette of a fortress. This rarity makes it a valuable monument for understanding what a feudal castle looked like in the Paris basin.

The castle nearly disappeared from the map, despite a Renaissance-era residence and, from the 18th century onward, a simple farm. It gradually lost its original character before slipping into ruins. Reacquired in 1992 by the Département de Seine-et-Marne, it then underwent a major restoration that restored its current prominence.
