In the north-west of Paris stands a cemetery that’s a little unloved and somewhat overlooked by both tourists and locals: the Batignolles Cemetery. It’s up to you to change that and discover its 15,000 tombs, including those of illustrious French artists.

Strolling through the Epinettes neighborhood? Then pay a visit to the Batignolles Cemetery! A charming spot to wander among the graves of everyday people and notable personalities alike. While the Batignolles Cemetery isn’t the best known among Parisian cemeteries, nor the busiest, it’s up to you to change that.

It's fair to say that this cemetery in northwest Paris is, unfortunately, cut through in its old section by the noisy périphérique ring road. There’s nothing glamorous about a cemetery here. Opened in 1833, the Batignolles Cemetery is nevertheless the third largest cemetery in Paris, ex aequo in area with the Montmartre Cemetery, about which we were just talking here.

Be careful not to get lost while wandering the avenues; the numbering of the sections doesn’t always follow a straight line, and finding a specific grave can sometimes be tricky.

Among the 15,000 graves in the cemetery, you can find, among others, the sépulture of director Jean Boyer, those of writers André Breton and Blaise Cendrars, and the poète Paul Verlaine, buried alongside his father, his mother and his son Georges.
