In Suresnes, atop the Mont-Valérien, a cemetery like no other overlooks Paris. Few residents of the Île-de-France region are aware that it is the only one of its kind in the area.

Nestled on the slopes of Mont-Valérien in Suresnes, within the Hauts-de-Seine (92), lies a lesser-known historical site: the Suresnes American Cemetery. With its rows of white crosses and stunning views over Paris, this peaceful site serves as a poignant reminder of the American soldiers who fought in Europe during the two world wars.

This is the only American military cemetery located in Île-de-France. Overall in France, there are eleven such cemeteries, mostly in regions heavily impacted by World War I and II battles, such as Normandy and the Meuse. Established after World War I, it serves as a tribute to American soldiers who died in France, particularly those who lost their lives in military hospitals set up around Paris.

The cemetery was established in 1919, shortly after the armistice. At that time, American authorities aimed to provide a permanent resting place for soldiers who fell far from home. They selected the site of Suresnes because its proximity to numerous military hospitals in the Paris region made it possible to bury soldiers who could not be repatriated to the United States.

Wide lawns stretch out between perfectly aligned rows of white marble crosses, while a memorial chapel overlooks the site, inviting reflection.
Today, more than 1,500 American soldiers are laid to rest here, most of whom fell during World War I.

Following World War II, the site gained renewed significance with the addition of a memorial. On its walls are inscribed the names of hundreds of soldiers reported missing, their bodies never recovered.

The cemetery also holds a symbolic place in the collective consciousness: it overlooks the capital and is located near the Mont-Valérien, another significant site of memory from World War II. Each year, official ceremonies take place there, notably during Memorial Day, the American day of remembrance for fallen soldiers.

Despite its historical significance, the site remains relatively understated and is often overlooked by local residents. Yet, with its tranquil landscape and its international history, the Suresnes American Cemetery continues to stand out as one of the most unique memorial sites in Île-de-France.
