Just a stone's throw from Paris, in the heart of Gennevilliers, a long-discreet old building is poised to reclaim its former swagger. The Richelieu Stables, located at the corner of Carnot and Jean-Jaurès streets, are the last vestige of a former feudal estate that once included a castle and a vast park. After years of neglect, these old stables of Hauts-de-Seine are now the focus of a major restoration project that will transform this slice of Île-de-France heritage into a House of Arts and Crafts.
Before evolving into a bustling, urban commune on the doorstep of Paris, Gennevilliers boasted a significant aristocratic estate. The Richelieu stables formed part of the outbuildings of the castle of Gennevilliers, closely tied to the Duke of Richelieu. The building seen today is regarded as the last surviving remnant of that grand complex, which once included a castle and a park.

The preserved wings are believed to have been built between the 18th century and the end of the Ancien Régime: the Carnot Street wing dates to around 1730, while the Jean-Jaurès Street wing is closer to 1785. The vanished château is said to have hosted Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour, and it was on that estate that the first performance of Beaumarchais's The Marriage of Figaro took place.
Today, the Richelieu's stables are set to give way to artisans. Following the rehabilitation, a house of art crafts will take shape there, featuring workshops, shared training and workspaces, as well as a garden and a courtyard designed as living spaces. The announced aim is to welcome fifteen artisans, notably in fields such as luthiery (instrument making), jewelry, or furniture restoration.
The project also includes restoring architectural elements, re-roofing, and fitting out roughly 700 square meters. Backed by the Fondation du patrimoine and the Mission Patrimoine, the project aims to turn an old brownfield site into a vibrant space dedicated to creativity and the transmission of skills. Construction was completed in April 2026, and the site is expected to welcome its first residents by early 2027!
